QUAKERISM:
A THEOLOGY FOR OUR TIME
Everyone possesses the light of divinity, says Quakerism. Experience is primary, the authority of scripture secondary. Modern science and biblical criticism support the primacy of experience. Quakerism fits our time.
Quakerism arose in seventeenth century England through the direct experience of the spirit within. Responding to the rise of science, Quakers emphasized experience over authority, and stood among the first biblical critics. They were radicals. Today Quakerism fits our culture. It accepts biblical criticism and modern science. It seeks silence and centeredness among our noise and multi-tasking. It seeks peace, equality, and community. It is universal, finding the light of God in all people, no matter what their religion, culture, race, sex, sexual orientation, or moral development. It is a theology for a tolerant, globalizing world.
